History

The enormous power Monceau sur Sambre Electrabel is better known as the Power Plant IM.
It was built by the then Intercom (now Electrabel) in 1921. Monceau sur Sambre was then an independent municipality and the new coal plant was one of the largest in Belgium. In the 50's and 60's, the central and expanded when Monceau sur Sambre in 1977 was added to Charleroi she was the main supplier of energy in the region. Originally this plant fully fired coal. However, the newer part ran on gas and was for years standby for any emergencies. In early 2005 there were 7 operating coal plants in Belgium. In 2006, Greenpeace protested against Electrabel. Under the motto: “it's your energy that pollutes” they asked politicians to replace the old polluting coal plants. Electrabel was with his coal plants account for 10% of total CO 2 emissions of Belgium. The plant was eventually closed in 2007.
